Free DSPT support for social care

Care Providers’ Voice is now supporting social care providers across North London to complete, refresh and maintain their Data Security Protection Toolkit (DSPT).

Delivered with Digital Care Hub as part of the national Better Security, Better Care programme.

The toolkit

What the DSPT is

The DSPT is an annual online self-assessment helping social care organisations demonstrate good data security and information governance. It must be completed or refreshed by 30 June each year.

Why it matters

What is the DSPT and why it matters?

Meet Legal & Regulatory Requirements

Demonstrates compliance with GDPR, data protection law and the National Data Guardian's Data Security Standards.

Build Trust with People, Families & Staff

Demonstrate that personal and sensitive information is handled safely and responsibly — boosting confidence in your service.

Be Ready for CQC Inspections

A completed DSPT provides clear, recognised evidence aligned to the CQC 'Well-Led' framework during inspection.

Reduce Cyber & Data Breach Risks

The DSPT acts as a health check, identifying weaknesses in systems, policies and staff awareness before incidents occur.

Strengthen Relationships with Commissioners

Local authorities and NHS partners increasingly expect DSPT compliance — supporting contracts and partnerships.

Access Key NHS Digital Systems

DSPT completion unlocks access to NHSmail, London Care Record and Universal Care Plan for safer, joined-up care.

In practice

A real-life example

When DSPT is not in place

  • Care staff cannot access digital care records
  • Medication rounds are delayed due to locked systems
  • A ransomware attack freezes files
  • Families lose confidence when data may be at risk
  • The incident must be reported to the ICO and CQC
  • Services face disruption, reputational damage and unexpected high costs

How DSPT helps prevent this

  • Care staff can access digital care records
  • Outdated systems are identified and addressed
  • Staff are trained to spot cyber threats
  • A clear incident response plan is in place
  • Care records, medications and communications remain safe and accessible
What’s at stake

Protect your service and the people you support

Cyber incidents already affect care services across the country — with smaller providers often at greatest risk. Completing the DSPT is essential protection for:

Your Residents

The people you support, and the records that keep them safe.

Your Staff

Teams who need reliable access to the systems they work in.

Your Reputation

Confidence from families, commissioners and regulators.

Your Ability to Operate

Services that keep running when something goes wrong.
